In the Glare of Burning Churches is a demo by the Polish black / pagan metal band Graveland .
music
The sound quality is very raw and the guitars in particular have a very harsh sound, even for Black Metal standards. The pieces are rather slow, but still very aggressive. The discreetly used keyboards (Darken uses a sound modeled on the church organ as on the debut ) and sound samples create a gloomy atmosphere. John Chedsey of Satan Stole My Teddybear wrote of the singing as "the most tortured screams I've heard in a long time."
Pagan / Viking Metal influences are not present, these musical influences and lyrical themes only appeared from the second album Thousand Swords . Instead, the band was compared to the hardcore band Discharge and criticized the poor production of the album.
The lyrics are mostly about anti-Christian themes, the title alludes to church arson by members of the Norwegian black metal scene. Darken gave Bathory and Emperor as influences .
Versions
There are three different versions of the demo: the original, the remastered version from 1996 with bonus material and a slightly different recording, in which the vocals are different. This third version was released in 1999 together with the demo Epilogue .
In 1996, 1999, 2008 and 2009 In the Glare of Burning Churches was re-released on CD and record on various labels.
reception
In the Glare of Burning Churches enjoys a reputation as a classic in parts of the black metal scene. Since Graveland was not yet considered an NSBM band at the time of publication , the demo was widely used.
In September 2008, In the Glare of Burning Churches was indexed together with The Celtic Winter , Following the Voice of Blood and Immortal Pride by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People (List B).
