The Independence Seaport Museum is an American museum in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . It is located on the east side of the Independence Historic Area right on the Delaware . Around 80,000 people visit the exhibition each year.

history

The museum was founded in 1960 as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum and located on Delaware. It was officially opened in 1961 and had an exhibition space of only around 185 m² (2,000 sq. Ft.). In 1965, it moved to a rented building on Chestnut Street and expanded to approximately 930 m² (10,000 sq. Ft.). The first main exhibition took place from March 16 to May 1, 1966. Again in 1971 the museum moved to a building now approximately 2,880 m² (31,000 sq. Ft.), Also on Chestnut Street. Also in that year the Gazela from Portugal could be used for the exhibition, but the ship was handed over to Penn's Landing Corporation in 1984 . In 1980 the cargo ship Maple was won over for the boat building workshop. In 1995 the museum changed its name to Independence Seaport Museum and moved into the former Port of History building on Penn's Landing . This further increased the area to now 10,220 m² (110,000 sq. Ft.). The museum achieved its greatest success in 1996 when it was allowed to take responsibility for the USS Olympia (C-6) and the USS Becuna (SS-319) , both of which are National Historic Landmarks . In 2004, the millionth visitor since moving to Penn's Landing was welcomed.

exhibition

The museum has an exhibition building measuring approximately 10,200 m² (110,000 sq.ft.) and a pier. In the museum itself, models and plans as well as other exhibits can be seen. Among other things, the history of shipping in the city of Philadelphia and the USA, as well as the two ships in particular, is discussed there. The highlights of the exhibition are the two former warships of the US Navy . One is the protected cruiser USS Olympia (C-6) built in 1892 and the diesel-electric submarine USS Becuna (SS-319) from 1944. The three-masted sailing ship Gazela, which was part of the exhibition until 1981, is not part of the exhibition. and the USS New Jersey , a battleship from World War II , anchored on the opposite bank in the state of New Jersey .
