Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos is a space flight simulation from Particle Systems for Windows . It was published in November 2001 by Atari SA . It is the sequel to I-War: Rebellion in the Universe .

action

Independence War 2 takes place 100 years after its predecessor. The central government has lost a large part of its influence to large corporations, which impose their conditions on the inhabitants of the colonies and largely treat them like slaves. Cal Johnston grew up in the Badlands, a settlement area far from Earth. His father is a miner and protests against the oppression by the big corporations, which is why he is murdered. Twelve-year-old Cal swears revenge on his father's murderer, CEO Caleb Maas, but is surprised by him and ends up in prison. Only five years later does he manage to escape and set out to chase the murderer. He becomes a pirate in order to gradually earn the funds necessary to fight his father's murderer. The starting point of his forays is a hidden pirate base of his grandmother in the Efreeti star nebula.

Gameplay

As in the predecessor, the player controls his flight vehicle through space and engages in flight battles with computer-controlled spaceships. This time, too, there are larger ships to choose from and the flight behavior is determined by inertia and a simulation of Newton's Laws , as in the predecessor , ie speed and direction of flight are only influenced by the use of a corresponding (counter) thrust.

In contrast to the previous version, there is no need to switch between the ship stations for the different types of actions. Instead, there is a uniform interface for all tasks relating to the ship. Also, the player no longer clings to a given mission course, but can freely explore 16 star systems and pursue secondary activities (mainly piracy) , similar to Elite and Privateer . The plot of the game is divided into 50 main missions.

Traveling over longer distances is possible with a hyperdrive, the so-called LDS (linear displacement drive system). Saving the game status is only possible when you stop at your own base, where the captured shipments can also be sold and invested in weapons, ship extensions or new types of ships.

In multiplayer mode via LAN , TCP / IP or Gamespy Arcade there are four modes to choose from with Deathmatch , Team Deathmatch , Capture the Flag and Bomb Tag. In the Bomb Tag mode, a player carries a bomb on board his ship with which he must try to destroy his opponents. The opponents try to shoot down the bomb carrier in time and then take over the released bomb themselves in order to slip into the role of the new bomb carrier.

development

The completion of the development work was announced at the beginning of June.

In December 2001, Atari released a free modification that allows the player to continue playing even after the main storyline has been completed.
