The Index Point ( English for index finger tip ) is a flat and ice-covered headland on the Borchgrevink coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . As the eastern branch of the Mountaineer Range, it protrudes into the Ross Sea at the end of the Mariner Glacier at a distance of 2.5 km west of Emerging Island .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee gave it its descriptive name in 1966 because of its appearance.
