Airplane and occupants

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A8, which was 18 years and 8 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton (Washington) and made its maiden flight on September 18, 1974, before being delivered to Indian Airlines in the same month. The aircraft had the factory number 20961, it was the 375th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration VT-ECQ . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A engines. At the time of the accident, the machine had completed 43,866 operating hours.

There were 118 people on board, including 112 passengers and 6 crew members.

the accident

The first three flight segments were flown without any special incidents. The stopover at Aurangabad Airport was hot and humid. The machine was heavily loaded for the onward flight.

The crew received clearance to take off from runway 09. The take-off run took an unusually long time, the machine only took off shortly before the end of the runway. It was only slowly gaining height. When the Boeing flew over an expressway to the east behind the runway, it was only 2.10 meters above the road. The machine collided with a truck that was carrying a towering cotton crop. The left landing gear tore off, as did the thrust reverser and compressor blade of the left engine. The machine continued to fly until it became entangled in power lines three kilometers northeast of the airport and fell to the ground. The machine broke apart in the crash and caught fire.

Victim

In the accident, 55 people were killed on board, including 53 passengers and two flight attendants. There were 63 survivors, including the captain, first officer, two flight attendants, and 59 passengers. 12 injured people were admitted to hospitals, three of whom were discharged after a brief treatment.

Cause of accident

In the accident investigation to the pilot in command has been given the responsibility for the accident - this was the machine too late rotate can thereby chosen the wrong rotation technique.

The investigators saw another cause in the failure of the transport authority to regulate traffic on the expressway east of the airport during flight operating hours.

After the accident, it was initially speculated that the truck was on the tarmac, but the Lok Sabha was soon able to clarify the connections.

consequences

Indian Airlines paid the families of each adult crash victim ₹ 500,000 Indian rupees and ₹ 250,000 for each child.
