The Indiana Dunes State Park is located near Porter , 76 kilometers east of Chicago on the southern edge of Lake Michigan . It is spread over 8.8 km². The park was established in 1925, making it one of the first to be included in Indiana's State Park System. As in all state parks, there is an entrance fee. The state park is surrounded on all sides, including the water, by Indiana Dunes National Park.
Winds formed the beaches on the shores of Lake Michigan, which turned into dunes when the lake level fell at the end of the Ice Age. The Indiana Dunes have long been home to Indian tribes such as the Potawatomi and Miami . They served as trade routes between tribes of the Mississippi and the Great Lakes .
