In Chain O'Lakes State Park , 8 of 11 lakes are connected by water passages in a landscape formed by ice age glaciers. The 881 acre state park is located in Noble County in the US state of Indiana .

In the Pleistocene 14,000 years ago, a thick glacial shield still lay over the area. In the state park , the traces of a glacier run can be seen, whose meltwater floods have created a glacial channel , the Tunnel Valley . After the subsidence, rubble, debris and blocks of dead ice were deposited , from which today's lakes emerged. Watercourses connect eight of the eleven created lakes and can be explored by canoe.

Before white pioneers settled down, a tribe of Miami Indians 30 wigwams had already settled on the north shore of what would later become Bowen Lake . William Bowen was one of the first white settlers in the 1830s. Opened in 1960, the state park has BBQ areas, hiking trails, boat rentals, camping, and a visitor center in the Stanley Schoolhouse, built in 1915 . In 2009, 260,000 visitors could be counted.

Owls, hawks, woodpeckers, and a variety of songbirds regularly nest in the state park. Specifically, the lemon warbler , Andean treecreeper , garden tyrant , titmouse warbler , Henslow bunting , or long-eared owl and broad-winged buzzard are among the more frequently visible birds. The crab heron , barn owl , yellow-headed blackbird and evening grosbeak are less common.
