The evening grouse ( Hesperiphona vespertina , syn .: Coccothraustes vespertinus ) is an American songbird belonging to the finch family .

features

The 20 cm long evening grouse is a bird with a powerful beak and short tail. The male is brown on the head, neck, chest, yellow on the abdomen, back, forehead and over-eye stripes, black on the wings and tail and white on the wing covers. The female is gray-brown on the back, light brown on the belly and has gray and white spots on the black wings.

Occurrence

The evening grosbeak breeds in the coniferous forest zone from southern Canada over the western USA to south to Mexico . Some birds winter in the central and eastern United States.

behavior

This bird searches for fruits and seeds high up in trees. In the breeding season, insects supplement the food. The bird can even crack cherry pits with its powerful beak. In winter, evening grosbeak form large swarms that come to bird feeders in gardens when they are looking for food.

Reproduction

Two to four eggs are incubated for around two weeks in a shell nest made of twigs in the forks of trees. The young birds are fledged at two weeks.

Distribution area

Systematics

The evening grosbeak and the Abeille grosbeak are closely related to the Eurasian grosbeak ( Coccothraustes coccothraustes ) and are placed in the genus Coccothraustes by some authors . The phylogenetics of these three species has not yet been investigated in detail and a direct relationship between the two New World Hesperiphona species and the Eurasian grosbeak has not been proven. Anatomical studies from 1925 suggest a close relationship between Hesperiphona and the juniper grouse.

Subspecies

Three subspecies have been described:

  • Hesperiphona vespertina brooksi Grinnell , 1917 - Canada, USA
  • Hesperiphona vespertina montana Ridgway , 1874 - Mexico
  • Hesperiphona vespertina vespertina ( Cooper , 1825) - Norway, United Kingdom
