The Hooded Grosbeak ( Hesperiphona abeillei ) is a bird art from the subfamily of the Stieglitz-like . It occurs exclusively in Central America.

Appearance

The Abeillekernbeißer reaches a body length of sixteen to eighteen centimeters. There is a gender dimorphism .

The male has black plumage on the head, neck, throat, chest, wings and tail. The coverts of the arm wings are whitish. The back, on the other hand, is greenish yellow. The underside of the body, like the upper tail-coverts, is bright yellow. The eyes are brown. The beak is strong and yellowish. In the female, the black plumage areas are significantly smaller. Only the wings and the tail as well as the top of the head up to the neck are black. The back and the upper tail covers are olive colored. The throat is bright yellow. The underside is yellow-brown.

Way of life

The distribution area of the Abeillekernbeißer are Mexico and Guatemala . Parts of the distribution area overlap with that of the evening grosbeak . The habitat of the Abeille kebab is dense coniferous and mixed forests.

The nest is erected free-standing in a fork of a branch. The clutch comprises four eggs. The young are fully fledged after twenty days and independent after 30 days.

Systematics

The evening grosbeak and the Abeille grosbeak are closely related to the Eurasian grosbeak ( Coccothraustes coccothraustes ) and some authors place them in the genus Coccothraustes alongside this . The phylogenetics of these three species has not yet been investigated in detail and a direct relationship between the two New World Hesperiphona species and the Eurasian grosbeak has not been proven. Anatomical studies from 1925 suggest a close relationship between Hesperiphona and the juniper grouse.
