description

The Indian algae eater has an elongated spindle-shaped body and a bluish-brownish basic color. The fish can grow up to 15 centimeters.

Occurrence

Crossocheilus latius occurs in South Asia in countries such as India , Bangladesh , Myanmar , Nepal and southern China . You can find them in the catchment area of the Ganges , Brahmaputra , Mahanadi , Krishna River , Teesta and Tista River on the border with the Darjeeling district . They are native to clear water rivers, which in many places are fed by melt water.

attitude

The Indian algae eater is popular in aquariums because it eats algae . It has even been observed to eat brush algae. The fish are very lively and, as active swimmers, have a certain amount of space in the pool. At least 100 liters, but better still 200 liters or more will be assumed. Sandy, stony or gravelly ground with a moderate current and a water temperature of 18 to 24 ° C is ideal. Their strong agility and their escape behavior often make it difficult to get out. They especially like to jump early in the morning. The Indian algae eater can be kept in large tanks densely planted with aquatic plants with relatively soft water (approx. 200 µS) and a neutral pH value. The fish, which only feel comfortable in groups of five to eight animals, feed mainly on algae, but also like to eat food tablets. If they are fed too much, their behavior to keep the algae population short will decrease. In community tanks, they often showed aggression within their own group as well as towards other species in the form of food competition and terrorial behavior.
