Ekanayake Mudiyaselage Idame Gedara Indunil Madushan Herath (born March 27, 1993 in Mahiyangana ) is a Sri Lankan middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800-meter run .

Athletic career

Indunil Herath gained his first international experience at the Asian Youth Games in Singapore in 2009 , where he won the bronze medal over 800 meters in 1: 56.33 minutes. In the following year he took part in the youth Olympic Games, which were held there for the first time , and took third place in the B final. Two years later he was seventh over 400 meters and fifth over 800 meters at the Junior Asian Championships in Colombo . In addition, he won the bronze medal in the Sri Lankan 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 11.79 minutes. In 2014 he was fourth at the Jogos da Lusofonia in Goa over 800 meters and with the relay. The following year he took part in the Asian Championships in Wuhan , where he finished fifth in 1: 51.51 minutes. In 2016 he won the South Asian Games in Guwahati and was eliminated from the Indoor Asian Championships in Doha in 1: 57.26 minutes in advance. In the following year he again took part in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar , where he finished fifth in 1: 50.57 minutes. At the beginning of September he won the silver medal behind the Katari Jamal Hairane at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in 1: 49.45 min .

In 2018 he took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time and finished eighth there in 1: 51.36 minutes in the final. The following year he won the South Asian Games in Kathmandu in 1: 50.52 minutes and thus successfully defended his title.

In 2013 and 2015, as well as in 2016 and 2019, Herath was the Sri Lankan champion in the 800-meter run.
