The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) for East Friesland and Papenburg is one of 79 chambers of industry and commerce in Germany. It has about 29,000 members.

Seat and chamber district

The IHK for East Friesland and Papenburg has its headquarters at Ringstrasse 4 in the administrative district in Emden. No other branches are maintained.

The district includes the districts of Aurich , Leer , Wittmund and the independent city of Emden (these together form the historical territory of East Friesland ) as well as the city of Papenburg , which, in contrast to the rest of the district of Emsland, was assigned to the chamber district of the IHK in Emden due to the maritime orientation of the economy . All companies in this region are obliged to be members of the Chamber of Commerce. The only exceptions are craft and agriculture.

organization

The IHK is jointly represented by President Wilhelm-Alfred Brüning and General Manager Torsten Slink. They are supported by four vice presidents and one deputy chief executive. The Presidium is elected from the members of the 50-person general assembly , which is made up of members from various branches of the economy.

Business areas

The IHK for East Friesland and Papenburg divides its tasks into six business areas.

  1. Location policy: The division is shaped by the economic sectors that are predominant in the region: seaports, tourism, shipyards, the automotive industry and wind energy. The location policy department also provides industry support for trade , transport and tourism . The services range from analyzes of regional economic development and statements on economic policy to observation of local and regional politics. The location policy department is involved in land use and development plans, commercial space and traffic concepts.
  2. Start-up support and business support: The start-up support and business support department looks after all sectors in the services division. The department supports business start-ups and corporate succession . Information is provided here about industry data and legal market access conditions. The IHK also offers help to companies in difficulty.
  3. Training and further training: The training and further training area offers advice on training, conducts the examinations, offers the apprenticeship exchange and an arbitration board and provides information about vacant apprenticeships. In terms of continuing education, the IHK offers courses with examinations, certificate courses (without examinations), exams without IHK courses and seminars lasting one to several days. The IHK provides information about possible funding, carries out further training and also conducts the exams. A seminar program is published once a year.
  4. Innovation and Environment: The Innovation and Environment department wants to offer support in technology transfer and provide information on funding, industrial property rights and technical regulations. Other topics are environmental protection and questions of occupational health and safety.
  5. International: The region is heavily dependent on exports. The export quota of the companies is above the state and national average. The foreign trade advisory service provides information on foreign companies and markets, provides information on customs, imports and exports and arranges business contacts and business partners. This information is created together with other IHKs but also in cooperation with the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs), which are represented worldwide.
  6. Law and trade: The IHK also publishes information on current legal issues and developments, and advises companies, politics and administration on legal issues. The operation of arbitration boards and the appointment of experts are also important tasks . Legislative procedures that affect the interests of member companies are accompanied by statements.

history

The ordinance on the establishment of chambers of commerce in the Kingdom of Hanover of April 7, 1866 led to the formation of the chambers in Aurich, Emden, Norden and Papenburg in East Friesland. With the Prussian Chamber of Commerce Act of 1870, these were merged into one chamber. In 1872 the chamber was named Chamber of Commerce Ostfriesland and Papenburg. In 1924 it became the "Chamber of Commerce and Industry for East Friesland and Papenburg". With the seizure of power by the National Socialists, the "done in 1933 Gleichschaltung " of the chamber and the elimination of self-management of the economy. In 1942 the IHK was dissolved and incorporated into the Weser Ems regional chamber of commerce . After the war, the IHK is re-established.
