The Hunedoara – Ghelari industrial line (also known as the Transylvanian mine railway ) was built in 1900 in Transylvania, then Hungary . It transported iron ore , lime and talc , which was mined in the mountains near Ghelari and Crăciuneasa , to the steelworks in Hunedoara . The castle Hunedoara is located directly on the route.

After 1970 the route was gradually shortened and in 1990 passenger traffic was discontinued. For freight traffic , locomotives of the type L45H were then mainly used, which came from the locomotive factory August 23 in Bucharest . In the 1990s, the operation was limited to the section Hunedoara - Zlaşti ( Hungarian Zalasd ). From the end of 2006 traffic was idle. In 2009 the route was removed. The vehicles were sold. A local association is committed to rebuilding it as a museum railway .
