Inez Clare Verdoorn

Inez Clare Verdoorn (born June 15, 1896 in Pretoria ( Transvaal ), † April 2, 1989 in Pretoria (Transvaal)) was an internationally known South African botanist . Your official botanical author abbreviation is " I.Verd. ".

Verdoorn dealt with the systematics , morphology and biogeography of plants with a focus on seed plants (Spermatophytina) and thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

Live and act

Inez Clare Verdoorn was born on June 15, 1896 in Pretoria, today's capital of South Africa. From 1916 she was at the Loreto Convent School, a private high school in Pretoria. After a few positions in the public service, in 1919 became an assistant in the herbarium of the South African "Division of Botany and Plant Pathology". Between 1925 and 1927 she worked as a liaison officer in Kew at the Institute Royal Botanic Gardens . Upon her return, she became head of the herbarium in South Africa. After her retirement in 1951, she worked intensively on further research. She published more than 200 publications and described numerous plants. She died in Pretoria on April 2, 1989. Significant parts of her estate with around 4,000 plants have been transferred to appropriate collections and herbaria.

Honors

Tulbaghia verdoorniae was named after Inez Verdoorn.

  • 1957 President of the SA Biological Society
  • 1964 President of Section B of the SA Association for the Advancement of Science
  • 1967 honorary doctorate Ph.D. from the University of Natal
