Ingmar Egede

Ingmar Egede (born September 21, 1930 in Qeqertarsuaq ; † August 9, 2003 ) was a Greenlandic psychologist , human rights activist , teacher and rector .

Life

Ingmar Egede was born in 1930 as the son of businessman, regional councilor, teacher and non-fiction author Peter Egede (1908–1996) and his Danish wife Asta Irmelin Porsild (1903–1978). His grandfathers were the Provincial Councilor Abel Egede (1880–1945) and the biologist Morten Pedersen Porsild (1872–1956).

Ingmar Egede grew up in Upernavik Kujalleq , Oqaatsut and Akunnaaq and was trained in Silkeborg , Denmark, from 1939 to 1954 . In 1954 he became a teacher in Hillerød at Marie Mørks Skole and a year later head of the school in Qaanaaq . In 1961 he moved to Danmarks Lærerhøjskole , became a school inspector in Maniitsoq in 1966 and returned to Danmarks Lærerhøjskole in 1968. In 1971 he became a consultant for educational development work and in 1972 he became a school psychologist. In 1975 he was appointed Rector of Ilinniarfissuaqs , which he remained for 13 years before he was appointed advisor to the Greenland Ministry of Culture and Education in 1988. From 1989 to 1992 he sat on the board of directors of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference , where he campaigned for Inuit rights, and was then vice-chairman until 1995. He sat on numerous other councils and committees, mainly on school and education, and was a co-founder of Siumut in the 1970s .

On October 19, 1953, he married the school psychologist Annelise Helledie (1930–1991), daughter of Valdemar Helledie (1899–1975) and Nielsine Kristine Pedersen (1899–1982). The marriage had three children:

In 2003 he succumbed to long-term cancer at the age of 72.
