Peter Egede

Peter Lars Abraham Egede (born February 5, 1908 in Nuuk ; † October 10, 1996 ) was a Greenlandic businessman , councilor , teacher and non-fiction author .

Life

After leaving school, Peter Egede attended Grønland's seminarium from 1924 to 1930 . Subsequently, he was employed in the office of the Landsfoged of South Greenland , was transferred to the colony office and later to Qeqertarsuaq . There he taught Danish and was an accountant at the Telegraph Station of the Arctic Station of the University of Copenhagen , where he worked for his father-in-law. In 1933 he became Udsteds administrator . From 1946 to 1952 he was a trade administrator and then fisheries manager for eleven years. He worked u. a. in Kangaamiut and Akunnaaq . In 1953 he wrote the book Fiskeri med bundgarn (fishing with the bottom net ).

From 1948 to 1951 he sat in the Sysselrat and was a member of the court in Maniitsoq . In 1951 he was elected to the National Council for a period. From 1971 to 1973 he was also the official chairman of Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel . He is also considered the first mayor of Maniitsoq municipality .

Peter Egede has received numerous awards for his work. He received the Kongelige Belønningsmedalje with crown, was honored by the Greenlandic Writers' Association in 1982, had the honorary award of the Nuuk municipality from 1987, the Nuna Fondens Hæderspris since 1988 and received the silver Nersornaat on June 21, 1989. He died very old at the age of 88 on June 10th October 1996.

Peter Egede was the son of the regional councilor and fisherman Abel Pavia Niels Egede (1880–1945) and his wife Dina (1875–1952). His brother-in-law was Frederik Nielsen (1905–1991). On August 22, 1930, he married the Danish Asta Irmelin Porsild (1903–1978), daughter of the biologist Morten Pedersen Porsild (1872–1956) and his wife Johanne Kirstine Nielsen (1870–1940) in Nuuk . Her son, the psychologist, human rights activist and principal Ingmar Egede , who died in 2003, was born in Qeqertarsuaq on September 21, 1930 .
