Cultural Integration Initiative

The initiative Cultural Integration was established in December 2016 and is based on a suggestion of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration , the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs , the Ministry of the Interior and the German Cultural Council back . The constituent meeting took place on December 15, 2016 in the Federal Chancellery. The spokesman for the initiative is the managing director of the German Cultural Council, Olaf Zimmermann .

The project aims to show what contribution culture can make to integration in a multicultural Germany and thus to provide theses on social cohesion.

The initiative aims in particular to provide impetus for an open social discourse on the present and to pose important questions about the future. For this purpose, statements on integration reports or legal texts or on a new partnership agreement are used.

15 theses developed by the project were presented to the public on May 16, 2017.

The theses were based on the concept of culture that was formulated by the UNESCO world community in the "UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policy " in Mexico in 1982. The UNESCO definition of culture is based on the fact that “culture in its broadest sense can be viewed as the totality of the unique spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional aspects that characterize a society or a social group. This includes not only art and literature, but also ways of life, basic human rights, value systems, traditions and beliefs. "

  2. Everyday coexistence is based on cultural customs .
  3. Gender equality is a cornerstone of our coexistence.
  4. Religion also belongs in public space .
  5. The art is free .
  6. A democratic culture of debate and dispute strengthens opinion-forming in a pluralistic society .
  7. Immigration and integration are part of our history.
  8. The liberal democracy requires tolerance and respect .
  9. The parliamentary democracy lives through engagement.
  10. Civic engagement is lived democracy.
  11. Education creates access to society.
  12. German language is the key to participation .
  13. Dealing with history is never finished.
  14. Paid work is important for participation, identification and social cohesion.
  15. Cultural diversity is a strength.
