Olaf Zimmermann (born February 21, 1961 in Limburg an der Lahn ) is a German publicist , former art dealer and since March 1997 the managing director of the German Cultural Council .

Live and act

After attending a vocational school and subsequent technical college, Zimmermann completed an internship as an art dealer. He was managing director of several galleries in a row. In 1987 he set up his own gallery for contemporary art. The gallery had locations in Cologne and Mönchengladbach .

From 1991 a journalist and consulting office was added in Mönchengladbach. As managing director of the German Cultural Council e. V. Zimmermann has been working since March 1997. In this position, he and Theo Geißler are the publisher of the magazine of the German Cultural Council Politics & Culture , which is sold through subscriptions and in free kiosk sales.

The publicist is a voluntary board member of the Social Democratic Cultural Forum with a focus on art, culture and social development. Zimmermann was the honorary moderator of the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Convention , which opened on October 19, 2011 and closed on February 28, 2013 with recommendations. In 2013 Zimmermann was appointed to the advisory board of the Federal Cultural Foundation . Zimmermann was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Erich Pommer Institute . In 2015 Zimmermann was appointed as a new member of the Synod, the church parliament of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO). Zimmermann is a member of the program advisory board for the German contribution to a European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

Zimmermann worked for expert commissions of the German Bundestag for three consecutive legislative periods . From 1998 to 2002 he was head of the art and culture working group of the Information Society Forum set up by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and a member of the Study Commission for the Future of Civic Engagement . In the 15th legislative period from 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the German Bundestag 's study commission on culture in Germany . This work continued into the following legislative period up to its final report in 2007.

In 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Zimmermann was appointed to the main jury of the German Computer Game Award (DCP), and in 2018, 2019 and 2020 he is chairman of the main jury of the German Computer Game Award.

He is the spokesman for the “ Initiative cultural integration ” of the German Cultural Council, founded in December 2016 , which is committed to social cohesion and togetherness. The initiative for cultural integration is based on a suggestion by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the German Culture Council.

Olaf Zimmermann was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2020 .

He lives and works in Berlin, is married and has three children.
