The Institute for Social and Cultural Research e. V. ( ISK ) was a non-profit organization, which in 1988 by scientists at the University / Polytechnic Duisburg (head of the later, including Gerhard Jahn Community College in Duisburg ) and Thomas Rommelspacher was founded.

The content of the work done was shaped by the Ruhr area , the region in which the institute was located: an industrial city landscape in which many social problems are more pronounced than elsewhere in Germany . Many of the institute's projects related to the city of Duisburg, the seat of the ISK.

Range of services of the institute

  • Preparation and application-oriented analysis of databases that are available in authorities and social organizations but have not yet been used
  • Qualitative studies that provide information about self-help potential, coping strategies and interpretation patterns of individual population groups
  • Needs and supply analyzes that improve the rationality and accuracy of social planning
  • Impact studies that provide information about the effectiveness, efficiency and social acceptance of current and newly initiated programs of action
  • Development of strategic concepts, scientific support and advice on model projects
  • Further training, organization of specialist conferences, symposia, etc.

In order to ensure that the results of scientific research do not remain without consequences, the ISK also carried out practical projects - on its own or in cooperation with suitable institutions - in which new findings and innovative concepts are tested as models.

The institute's priorities were projects in the area of career choice orientation (within the framework of the School - Economy / Working Life project ), social reporting , migration and aging research .

The ISK was commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Social Affairs, Women and Family of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to scientifically support the state initiative dementia . The initiative was launched with the aim of developing or bundling measures and projects to improve the situation of people with dementia and their relatives. The tasks of the scientific support included in particular the evaluation and support of more than model projects. The Institute for Social and Cultural Research e. V. - in coordination with the Kuratorium Deutsche Altershilfe - offered a website with information on the model projects and held workshops on special aspects. The institute took part in the consultation and coordination discussions at the state level.

Projects in the context of “ Voluntary engagement by senior citizens” received nationwide attention. The infopool nrw software commissioned by the ISK was used by numerous senior citizens' agencies across the country.

The ISK website seniorenagentur.de was a pioneer in arranging volunteer work via the Internet.
