Karl Meessen

Karl Matthias Meessen (born July 30, 1939 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 28, 2015 in Düsseldorf ) was a German law scholar and university professor .

Life

After completing his Abitur in 1958, Meessen studied law at the Görres-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf from 1958 to 1962 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn and in London . After taking the first state examination in 1962, he completed a postgraduate course from 1963 to 1964 at the University of Geneva . In 1965 he received his doctorate from Ulrich Scheuner in Bonn with a dissertation on the subject of the option of citizenship and in 1967 he passed his second state examination in Düsseldorf.

While he worked as a lawyer from 1967 to 1973, first in Düsseldorf and then in Frankfurt am Main , he worked from 1969 to 1972 as a research assistant at the Institute for International Law at the University of Bonn. In 1972 he completed his habilitation with Ulrich Scheuner and Frederick Alexander Mann in Bonn with a thesis on the principles of international law governing cartel law .

Meessen was a university professor for public law , international law , European law and international commercial law from 1974 to 1975 at the University of Bonn, from 1975 to 1976 at the University of Cologne , from 1976 to 1996 at the University of Augsburg and from 1996 to 2004 at the Friedrich- Schiller University Jena . During his time in Augsburg , he was university president from 1979 to 1983 and held visiting professorships at the University of Chicago , at the University Institute for International Studies and Development at the University of Geneva and at the University of Paris II . During his time in Jena , he was the spokesman for the graduate school for European and International Business Law and a member of the board of the German-American Lawyers Association and was a visiting professor at the University of Nice .

After his time as a university lecturer, he worked as a lawyer in Düsseldorf from 2004.
