Prayers is a music project founded in 2013. The musicians refer to their style of music, which is based on the electro wave and old school hip-hop of the 1980s, as Cholo Goth or Killwave .

history

Prayers were founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley, both of whom previously played in local music groups. The initiative to create a joint music project came from Parley, who offered Reyes to record some pieces together. The debut album SD Killwave was created within two days , and was released and marketed without a production company. In spring 2014, the group's first music video was created for Ready to Bleed . In the same year the first EP, Gothic Summer, was released on the label Nite Ritual Records founded by Reyes . Meanwhile, Ian Astbury invited Prayers to support his group The Cult for four concerts in California. Astbury also patronized the group by promoting them as “the vanguard of a musical revolution”. Following a performance in Los Angeles, Travis Barker was made aware of the group by his photographer, who had attended the concert. Barker got involved with the group's music and contacted the band via Instagram to produce the second album Young Gods and publish it via LaSalle Records . Barker also played drums for Prayers on the album and at the record release event. The publication was followed by a tour of the United States, on which a drum machine was used again. In spring 2016 the single Black Leather with Kat Von D was released via Nite Ritual Records .

content

Reyes names his own biography, especially his experience as a member of the Latin American street gang Sherman Grant Hill Park 27, as an essential aspect of his song lyrics. Also known as Sherman 27 , the gang is one of the oldest street gangs in San Diego and is based in the segregated neighborhood of Sherman Heights . Social isolation, loneliness and the feeling of depression are named as further lyrical emphases. Reyes describes a mixture of megalomaniac gangster attitudes and emotional vulnerability as those components of his personality, which he expresses with his music. The style term Cholo Goth , coined by the musicians, also goes back to the combination . With Cholo socio-cultural affiliation is underlined to Latin American Gangern. The Gothics scene and its subcultural and aesthetic form of expression is emphasized by the term Goth. Content-related and aesthetic overlaps between Latin American culture and the interests of the Gothic scene such as the Mexican cult of the dead or occultism are primarily emphasized in the group's music videos, but contrasted by means of gang scenarios and appearances.

style

The band names their style as Killwave , Occultwave , Shadowave or Cholo Goth . A direct influence of British Gothic Rock , however, is not stated. Occasionally, especially in the vocals, there are similarities with Speciman and Alien Sex Fiend . The sound of the group is considered to be an independent mix, which is influenced by the electro wave and synth pop of the early Depeche Mode and New Order as well as the death rock of the early Christian Death . Electronic music is described as dark and keyboard-heavy. The mostly computer-generated rhythm is considered simple and catchy. Reyes singing is described as emotional and is sometimes compared to that of Rozz Williams , whom Reyes describes as an important influence. Reyes uses both spoken singing and simple singing .
