The City and Vestische Archiv Recklinghausen is a municipal archive based in Recklinghausen . It sees itself as the central point of contact for questions about the history of the town of Recklinghausen and the regional history of the Vestes Recklinghausen , especially in the area of the late Middle Ages and early modern times . The offices of the Verein für Orts- und Heimatkunde Recklinghausen e. V. as well as that of the working group Vestischer Geschichts- und Heimatvereine e. V. are based there. The archive and a museum section on city history form the Institute for City History.
history
The city archive was founded in 1922 as an independent city institute. Forms of orderly storage of city files and documents can be traced back to the early 18th century; There is a first reference to an archive directory for 1712. The great fire of 1501, which also destroyed the first town hall, resulted in considerable loss of tradition. A depot-like storage of old stocks in the town hall building has been documented for the 19th century, and from around 1830 onwards, on the instructions of the Münster government, the filing and indexing of the archives was resumed.
From the middle of the 19th to the early 20th century, a clergyman, a doctor or a post office clerk looked after the archive on a part-time or voluntary basis. From 1908 to 1922 the archive store was located in a basement of the new town hall building on Erlbruch (built 1905–1908), adjacent to the police station, detention cell and council cellar. In 1922 the move to the ground floor of the Petrinum grammar school took place , in 1939 the archive moved to the Stephansturm of the city fortifications from the 14th century, near the former Electoral Cologne officials' residence, the so-called Engelsburg Recklinghausen . From 1961 to 1986 the city archive was housed in a residential building at Halterner Str. 4. In 1986, in the year of the city's 750th anniversary, the company moved to its current location. In 2011 the archive was modernized and expanded.
From 1922 to the end of the 20th century, long-standing history teachers held the office of city archivist mostly part-time, most recently Dr. Werner Burghardt. In 2001 the position of archive manager was filled full-time for the first time. Since 2010 the city archive and the Vestische Museum have been run under the common name of the Institute for City History . The archive manager is traditionally the editor of the Vestische Kalender (1923 ff.) And editor of the Vestische Zeitschrift (1892 ff.).
Stocks
The City and Vestische Archiv houses both communal and territorial holdings. The latter come mainly from the Electoral Cologne or Arenberg regional administration.
Municipal stocks
The basis of the archival tectonics was formed up to the 1920s by the city's old and core tradition from the city's foundation in 1236 to the end of the 18th century (inventory I). Stock II consists of the end of the Electoral Cologne period up to the age of high industrialization (approx. 1800 to 1900). Its importance as a historical archive for Vest Recklinghausen became less important than modern file management after the Second World War, as official files from the 20th century were evaluated and taken over en masse from the 1960s and 1970s . Today, around 6,600 file units from 1900 to 1960 form inventory III and since 1986 inventory IV. The older inventory is pertinence inventory . Since 1989/90, the archive has been recording the archival-worthy documents submitted by the city administration according to the provenance principle .
Territorial holdings - termed "Vestisches Archiv"
Extensive access to the ducal Arenberg rule over Vest Recklinghausen came into the archive around 1923/24. This also included files and documents from the Cologne period from the 12th century to 1802. Other Arenbergian additions relate to the class rule and asset management in Prussian times. The files of the Recklinghausen Office , which concern the Recklinghausen-Land community, which was constituted in 1837 , came to the city archive when it was dissolved in 1926. In 1929 the Counts Westerholt zu Westerholt handed over an extensive deposit to the city archives , including documents from the 13th century and files from the 15th century.
Thanks to these entrances to the Vest, the name Stadt- und Vestisches Archiv became established in the 1920s . Due to its old and aristocratic holdings, the Vestische Archiv was entered in the directory of nationally valuable archives in 1986.

tasks and activities
The archive offers the classic archival services , especially the preservation, indexing, provision, presentation and publication of historical documents. It tries to convey city and local history through lectures, exhibitions as well as archive and museum educational events. It serves as an extracurricular learning location for schools.
