The Institute Ice Stream (English for Institutseisstrom ) is a river of ice in the West Antarctic Ellsworth Land . It flows from the Antarctic Ice Sheet in a northerly direction and joins the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf southeast of Hercules Inlet on the Zumberge coast .
Teams from the United States Antarctic Research Program and the University of Wisconsin crossed the ice stream during seismic surveys of the area between 1958 and 1959 and 1963 and 1964, respectively. Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the ice stream after the Scott Polar Research Institute in 1984.
