A rig in music (often also referred to as a tour rig or instrument rig ) is the compilation and constellation of all device components of a musician that are used at performances, in the studio or for rehearsal purposes. Despite the same abbreviation for the name, it differs significantly from a light or stagerig (see there).

Several instrument rigs together form the backline of a show or studio line-up .

The respective rigs of the individual musicians differ very considerably; the designs and equipment are just as diverse as there are musical spectrums.

Drum rig

Studio drum rig

The Drum Rig always consists of the drum set and usually an individual carpet floor somewhat attenuates the slipping of the set playing and reverberant reflection. If the natural volume of the drums is not sufficient for the venue, a specially selected microphone set with accessories will be added. If the drummer plays while sitting and still needs to be visible to the audience, the drum rig is either set up on the side or positioned on a drum riser . At major events with changing artists, the risers of the drum rigs are often designed to be mobile in order to shorten the conversion times. It is not uncommon for the drum rig to have a submulticore so that all the necessary electrical connections can be made quickly in a few simple steps.

Usual additional equipment of a drum rig are, for example, e-pads , percussion instruments , metronome , buttkicker, personal monitoring , music stands and sometimes your own backdrops e.g. B. a band - backdrop or a projection screen.

Guitar rig

The guitar rig includes instruments , amplifiers , effects devices , tuners , microphone stands , cables, pedal boards , pedal switches and other accessories, e.g. music stands, footrests, bottlenecks , e-bow or a talk box . Often several instruments with different sound characteristics or at least one emergency instrument against string breakage or mood problems are kept in the guitar rig. There is a database of guitar rigs on an internet database.

Bassy

In the simplest case, a bass rig only consists of a double bass and a bar stool . Depending on the musician's individual taste, it can also take on the size of a guitar rig or, in the case of electric bass players, significantly exceed its size, since the instrument boxes, adapted to the range of the instrument, have to be more generously dimensioned.

Keith Emerson Keyboard Rig

Keyboard rig

Similar to the drum rig, the keyboard rig is usually positioned on the side of the stage or on a riser, as keyboard instrumentalists often prefer the seated playing position. A well-equipped keyboard rig can easily take up the size of a two-room apartment on large stages if grand pianos , Hammond organ with Leslie and various synthesizers are used. Professional personal monitoring of a keyboard rig is carried out in stereo and also wired via sub-multicores. Effect devices that are often used in keyrigs, such as the vocoder and MIDI expander, are usually installed in racks for the sake of transport safety and for ergonomic reasons , which takes up additional space.

Subrigs

Other individually compiled subrigs with their own risers are often set up for wind sections , backing vocal choirs, bagpipe or string sections .
