Intelligent Workload Management ( IWM ) is a concept for the administration of IT systems . It results from the meeting of dynamic infrastructure , virtualization and identity management as well as the development of software appliances. IWM enables the secure and compliant management and optimization of computing resources in physical, virtual and cloud environments , paving the way for the provision of business services to end customers.

The IWM paradigm is based on the traditional concept of workload management, in which the allocation of processing resources to tasks or workloads is dynamic based on business process priorities (for example, requests for company data can take precedence over processing obtained from online transactions), resource availability, security logs, and event planning.

In relation to the administration of IT systems and data centers, a workload in the broader sense is the total number of requests that a system receives from users and applications. The workload of a particular system can in turn be divided into independent units. Such a stand-alone unit is a workload in the strictest sense: an integrated stack consisting of middleware , an application , a database and an operating system , and is dedicated to a specific computing task. A workload is usually platform-independent, which means that it can be used in physical, virtual or cloud computing environments. A collection of related workloads that end users use to complete a specific set of business tasks can be referred to as a business service.

A workload is considered intelligent if a) it understands its security protocols and processing requirements and can decide for itself whether it can be deployed in the public or private cloud or only on physical devices; b) When it detects that it is nearing capacity and finds alternative computing resources to optimize performance; c) if he has identity and access controls as well as log management and compliance reporting functions and does not lose them when switching between different environments; and d) when fully integrated with the business services layer, ie, end-user computing requirements are not disrupted by distributed computing resources and the workload is compatible with current and new IT management frameworks .
