Intercourse is a defined for statistical purposes settlement area, a census-designated place (CDP) with 1,274 inhabitants in Lancaster County of the US state of Pennsylvania .
geography
Intercourse is 18 kilometers east of Lancaster and around 80 kilometers west of the city of Philadelphia . The US Highway 30 affected Intercourse in the South.
history
The village was founded in 1754 under the name Cross Keys , which is also the name of a local tavern. There is much speculation as to the origin of the later name of this small place. So the following various explanations are discussed, but none can really be justified:
- The center around an old racetrack that existed on Old Philadelphia Pike was called the Entercourse . It is believed that Entercourse gradually evolved into Intercourse and became the name of the place in 1814.
- Another theory concerns two famous streets that crossed here. The Old King's Highway from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (later Old Philadelphia Pike ) ran east and west through the center of town and intersected in the middle with the road from Wilmington to Erie . The intersection of these two streets is cited by some as the basis for the name Cross Keys . Later the intersection may have been referred to as the Intercourse .
- Another idea is based on the language used in the early days of the village. The word intercourse was widely used at the time to describe the "community" and "social interaction and support" shared in the faith community of a small rural village.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the residents of Intercourse make a living primarily from tourism and farms. Intercourse is because of its Pennsylvania Dutch Country -Location and his sexually suggestive name (Intercourse = sex ) is a popular tourist spot.
