International Working Group on Danube Research

The International Working Group on Danube Research ( IAD ) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) of a network of scientists in the Danube region in Europe . Founded in 1956, it has been registered as an association under Austrian law since 2004.

The board of directors of the IAD consists of the president, the vice-president and the general secretary. Together with currently 12 state representatives, they form the Presidium of the IAD. Cristina Sandu has been President and Thomas Hein of BOKU Vienna and the Lunz Water Cluster has been Vice President since 2017 . Katrin Teubner has been elected Secretary General of the University of Vienna since 2018 .

The IAD also consists of a group of scientists who focus on twelve topics in ecology and ecosystem management in the Danube region: water quality, biotic processes, microbiology, phytoplankton and phytobenthos, aquatic plants, alluvial forest ecology, LTSER and environmental history, fish biology and fisheries, immigration from foreign animal and plant species, ecotoxicology, Danube Delta structures and sustainable development as well as public participation.

The IAD members are active in the following ICPDR expert groups:

  • Expert group for river basin management
  • Expert group for flood protection
  • Hydropower Expert Group
  • Expert group on adaptation to climate change
  • Expert group "Public participation"
