International Society for Book Studies

The Internationale Buchwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft eV (IBG) is an independent organization for scientific endeavors related to the book medium, based in Munich. Its goals are to promote the exchange of information between book scholars, position the book in the media system, disseminate research and teaching on books, promote the status and function of the book as a medium and strengthen international contacts in book studies.

It was founded in 1999 as the German Society for Book Studies by book and media scholars from various fields.

people

The initiator of the company was Ludwig Delp . The chairman of the board is currently Wolfgang Schmitz , chief library director of the University and City Library of Cologne and head of the Cologne University Archives. The deputy chairwoman is Christine Haug , head of the book studies courses at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. The members of the board are Vincent Kaufmann, director of the Institute for Media and Communication Management at the University of St. Gallen; Bernhard von Becker, legal advisor of the publishing house CH Beck in Munich and the secretary Ralf Kirberg.

Meetings

The IBG holds annual conferences on current book science issues. The following topics have been dealt with in recent years:

  • The book in the information society. A book studies symposium (May 17 and 18, 2005 in the University and City Library of Cologne )
  • The audio book - a medium and its market (June 22 and 23, 2006, Literaturhaus Munich )
  • Problems of the new copyright law for science, the book trade and the libraries (June 21 and 22, 2007, at the CH Beck Munich publishing house)
  • Book design: an interdisciplinary forum (June 13th and 14th, 2008, further education center of the University of St. Gallen )
  • Quo vadis, children's book? Present and future of literature for young readers (September 24 and 26, 2009, German National Library in Leipzig)
  • The Digital Library - In Search of a Phantom (October 26 and 27, 2010, Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel)
  • Publishing culture (s) - Of dynasties and "locusts" (October 11th and 12th, 2011, University of Mainz, Institute for Book Studies)
  • The e-book - a challenge and an opportunity for the book and publishing world (October 9 and 10, 2012, Verlag CH Beck Munich)
  • Plagiarism - A multidisciplinary forum (November 6th and 7th, 2013, Room for Literature St. Gallen)
  • The picture book - history, aesthetics, media (September 25 and 26, 2014, Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt , Institute for German Studies)

Promotion of young scientists

In October 2010 a forum for young academics was set up in society to promote young academics and encourage their exchange with one another.

  • Following the IBG annual meeting on October 11th and 12th, 2011, the French-American publisher André Schiffrin held a fireplace chat with the members of the Young Talent Forum.
  • From April 7th to 8th, 2011, the first IBG Young Scholars meeting took place at LMU Munich . The keynote speeches were provided by Georg Jäger on the use of systems theory for research in book studies, Joseph Jurt on the literary field and Bill Bell (Center for the History of the Book, University of Edinburgh) on a new classification of the Colonial Reader. In addition, numerous young scholars presented their research projects.
  • On July 4, 2012, the second meeting of the IBG Young Scholars was held at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. The keynote speeches were given by Stefan Neuhaus (University of Koblenz-Landau) and Murray G. Hall ( Society for Book Research ).
  • On August 1st and 2nd, 2013 the IBG Young Scholars met at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Thomas Hess ( LMU Munich ) and David Oels ( JGU Mainz ) were invited .
