International Society of Fine Arts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Society of Fine Arts (IGBK) is the German national committee of the International Association of Art (IAA). It brings together the three most important German national artists' organizations on an equal footing: the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK), the German Association of Artists and the Association of Artists and Art Supporters ( GEDOK ). The association thus represents more than 14,000 visual artists.

history

The story begins in 1957. The artists Georg Meistermann and Hann Trier , both participants in the first documenta in 1955, met in Cologne with colleagues such as the surrealist painter Edgar Ende and the painter and graphic artist Max Unold . After the professional and exhibition bans during the Nazi regime, artists from Germany should be reconnected to the international network by integrating them into the international information and exchange network of the International Association of Art . The IAA, a non-governmental organization of professional visual artists, was founded in Paris in 1954.

The Kölner Runde, which HAP Grieshaber and the sculptor Karl Hartung joined shortly afterwards , founded the IGBK in May 1957. In its founding year, it was accepted into the IAA as a section of the Federal Republic of Germany with the support of the German UNESCO Commission .

In the social optimism at the beginning of the 1970s, visual artists increasingly discovered the advantages of the "unity of loners". IGBK chairman Georg Meistermann used the trend towards organization and lobbying to restructure the association. With the new version of its statutes in 1972, the IGBK renounced individual membership of artists in order to reform itself as a powerful umbrella organization.

In 2017 the IGBK celebrated its 60th anniversary in Berlin. IGBK chairmen are currently annette hollywood (Deutscher Künstlerbund) (spokeswoman for the board), Prof. Ulrike Rosenbach (GEDOK) and Werner Schaub (BBK).

Areas of activity

The IGBK organizes symposia and workshops on artistically relevant topics. Art education, communication, self-image, the conditions and perspectives of contemporary artistic work: These and other current questions are discussed with the aim of sharpening the eye for future-oriented ideas - always in an international context. The comparison with models and practical examples from other countries enables a critical review of German positions.

The IGBK supports visual artists in their cross-border activities. The information portal www.touring-artists.info, operated jointly with the International Theater Institute (ITI) Germany, offers artists in the visual arts and performing arts who carry out international projects, comprehensive information on the subjects of visas / residence, customs, taxes, social security, and others Insurance and Copyright. A database provides information on where artists can find funding for international exchange. Professional visual artists (residing in Germany) receive an international artist ID from the IGBK. This enables reduced or free admission to many museums and exhibition institutions worldwide.

In addition, cultural and lobbying work at the European level has been a focus of IGBK's work since the mid-1990s. The framework conditions for art and culture are increasingly being set in Brussels, whether it is about artist funding, status, tax or copyright issues. The two most important artists' organizations at European level in which the IGBK is actively involved are the International Association of Art (IAA) Europe and the European Council of Artists (ECA). In addition, IGBK is involved in the organizations Culture Action Europe (CAE) and On the Move (OTM) in Brussels. At the national level, the IGBK is a member of the German UNESCO Commission and the German Art Council of the German Cultural Council .
