International Association of Islamic Banks

The International Association of Islamic Banks ( International Association of Islamic Banks (IAIB); Arabic الاتحاد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية, DMG Ittiḥād al-Dawlī li-l-Bunūk al-Islāmīya ) was founded in 1977 in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia , to strengthen and promote cooperation and coordination of the existing national Islamic banks. Its headquarters are in Cairo , Egypt .

According to a report by this association, there are said to be 176 Islamic banking institutions in the world, of which 47% are in South and Southeast Asia , 27% in GCC (= Gulf Cooperation Council ) and the Middle East , 20% in Africa and 6% located in western countries.

Its long-time general secretary, the Egyptian Ahmed El-Naggar (* 1932), had already explained in his doctoral thesis in Cologne how one could avoid interest ( Ribā ) and other bans while concluding financial transactions.
