Ruschia is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the farmer Ernst Julius Rusch (1867–1957) from Namibia. Ruschia is one of the most species-rich genera in the family.

description

The species of the genus Ruschia grow as upright, sometimes prostrate to creeping or clumping shrubs . Their leaves are usually longer than they are wide and rarely receded. They are triangular to triangular and often toothed. Your epidermis is flat to papillae .

The small flowers appear singly or in more or less rich cymes . The petals are purple to white. The filamentous staminodes surround the stamens in a central cone. The nectarium forms a lophomorphic ring.

The five-compartment, rarely six-compartment capsule fruits are of the "Ruschia type": there are widely divergent swelling strips, strong, dimensionally stable fan covers with upright edges and locking pins. Valves are missing or narrow. The closure bodies are designed as hooks, hoods or rods. The fruits contain brown seeds that are smooth to papilose. The seeds are 0.6 to 1.6 millimeters long and 0.4 to 1.2 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Ruschia is distributed in South Africa with the exception of the eastern and northeastern areas, in the south of Namibia , in Lesotho and in the southwest of Botswana . The species grow under very different ecological conditions.

The first description of the genre by Gustav Schwantes was published in 1926. The type species is Ruschia rupicola . The genus Ruschia includes the following species:
