The Klingenthal International Accordion Competition is a German music competition for accordion players that is held annually in Klingenthal .

Since 1948 there has been an annual accordion competition in Klingenthal, initially called a competition for accordion soloists and accordion duos. He was part of since 1946 by the Klingenthaler harmonica -producers organized music festival in Klingenthal . Among the first applicants were names such as Hans Boll , Helmut Reinbothe and Herbert Gerbeth.

At first the accordion competitions had only local significance and later played a national role within the GDR .

In 1963 the international participation began with Antolizey Zielinski and Lech Kolago from Poland and Roger Verschelde from Belgium , but initially mainly related to the socialist countries of the Eastern Bloc . In 1970 soloists from 20 countries took part, and in the years that followed the competition expanded to include Europe , Asia and overseas .

In 1991 a board of trustees was established to promote the Klingenthal International Accordion Competition and the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition .

The International accordion competitions in Klingenthal influenced music literary international accordion prevail. They gave content and organizational guidance to most of the other accordion competitions. Today they are among the most important accordion competitions in the world. To have been a prizewinner in Klingenthal was the beginning of their careers for many masterful accordionists .

The aim of the competition is also to present new compositions for the accordion. In the course of the decades an extensive collection of original compositions for the accordion in the concert area was created. As already requested in the announcement of 1952, a compulsory piece, further optional pieces and "if possible original compositions" are basic requirements to this day.

The competition takes place annually in May and is open to soloists , duos and ensembles with up to five musicians. The musical profile ranges from classical music to entertainment . Currently, the Association for International Accordion Competitions in Klingenthal awards cash prizes of up to € 1000 in eight categories. The competition is accompanied by a supporting program with well-known artists from the accordion and bandoneon scene .

Little days of the harmonica

Klingenthal is also the host of the Small Days of the Harmonica , where young accordionists from the Free States of Saxony , Thuringia and Bavaria , from the Czech Republic and various host countries meet to demonstrate their skills and to gain competitive experience in addition to the prizes. Like the International Accordion Competition, this regional competition for young accordionists also contributes to Klingenthal's reputation as a city of music.
