The International Federation of Anti-Animal Experiments (IBT) is an Austrian animal rights organization that has existed since 1968 and is based in Vienna . From a legal point of view, it is an association .

The association advocates the abolition of all animal experiments . To this end, the organization informs the public about animal experiments and other animal welfare issues .

Selected parliamentary initiatives

Prohibition of animal experiments on great apes

On 4 February 2004, the IBT has a parliamentary citizens' initiative to ban on animal testing on large anthropoids introduced in the Petitions Committee of the Austrian National Council has been treated. As a result, the four parties represented in the Austrian parliament demanded a general ban on animal experiments on great apes by means of a joint motion for a resolution in December 2004 . Accordingly, the amendment to the Animal Experiments Act stipulates in Section 3 that animal experiments on all species and subspecies of chimpanzees , bonobos and gorillas as well as on all species and subspecies of the families of orangutans and gibbons are prohibited.

Import and trade ban on dog and cat fur

On June 30, 2005, the association introduced a parliamentary citizens' initiative to ban the import and trade of dog and cat fur and dog and cat leather and products made from them. Thereupon, in autumn 2006 , the responsible federal minister declared its intention to implement the import and trade ban on dog fur and cat fur and dog and cat leather as well as products made from them.

Animal welfare in the constitution

In spring 2009 the organization initiated a parliamentary citizens' initiative to anchor animal welfare in the constitution and forwarded it to parliament for consideration. The implementation of this open demand of the animal protection referendum is intended to ensure the protection of the life and well-being of animals in all those cases in which the balance of interests with constitutionally protected values ​​(e.g. freedom of worship, freedom of science or freedom of art) is required.
