The International Roma Day (also International Roma Day or World Roma Day ) is a global day of action , with the situation of the Roma , in particular the discrimination and persecution , attention and at the same time the culture of this ethnic minority is to be celebrated. The date April 8th commemorates the beginnings of the Roma civil rights movement with the First World Roma Congress, which took place on April 8, 1971 in London . At the congress, 23 representatives from nine countries discussed cultural and social issues related to the Roma. Among other things, the external names "Gypsy" and " Gypsy ", which were often perceived as discriminatory, were discarded in favor of the self-names "Roma". The Congress also adopted the Roma flag and Roma anthem, two important symbols of the global Roma civil rights movement. To commemorate this event, the Fourth World Roma Congress in Serock ( Poland) formally the introduction of an international day of action for the Roma.
