Jutta Steinruck (born September 1, 1962 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and trade unionist . From 2009 to 2017 she was a member of the European Parliament in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats . After she won a runoff election, Jutta Steinruck became the new Lord Mayor of Ludwigshafen am Rhein on January 1, 2018 .

After graduating from high school, Steinruck studied business administration at the Mannheim University of Cooperative Education , where she graduated in 1987 with a degree in business administration (BA). From 1987 to 1988 she was a personnel clerk at BBC AG (today: ABB AG ) in Mannheim. From 1988 to 1991 she worked as the head of the training and further education department at PWA AG in Mannheim. From 1991 to 2004 Jutta Steinruck was recruiting at Bilfinger Berger AG and then from 1994 to 2004 authorized signatory of the company's own AS Personalberatung GmbH. From September 2004 to 2011 she was the full-time chairwoman of the Front and South Palatinate region of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) .

Political career

Local and state politician

Jutta Steinruck has been a member of the SPD since 1996 . Since then she has held various party functions and belonged to different party bodies. Steinruck was, among other things, local association chairwoman, member of the state board of the SPD working group for workers' issues (AfA), member of the state party council of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate and the city council of the SPD Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

From 1999 to 2009 she was a city councilor in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. During her time as a city councilor, she was deputy parliamentary group leader, press spokeswoman, education policy spokeswoman and honorary group manager of the SPD city council group.

From May 2006 to July 2009 Steinruck was a member of the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate .

From March 2013 to November 2016 she was chairwoman of the SPD party council in Rhineland-Palatinate. On November 24, 2018, the state party conference elected her to the state executive committee of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate .

European politician

From the 7th electoral term (July 2009) she was a member of the European Parliament and belonged to the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). In the 8th electoral term she was for the Social Democrats in the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) and the delegation for the EU-Albania Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee. She was an alternate member of the Committee for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the delegation for the EU-Montenegro Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee. Her main focus was on labor market and social policy, and she is particularly committed to a more social Europe. Since July 2014 she has been the spokesperson / coordinator of the European Social Democrats for employment and social policy. Steinruck is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament . Within the group of German social democrats in the European Parliament, she had been a member of the executive committee as treasurer since the 7th legislative period. On January 1, 2018, she was succeeded by Michael Detjen as a Member of the European Union.

Lord Mayor of Ludwigshafen am Rhein

In September 2016, Jutta Steinruck announced that she would run for the office of Lord Mayor in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in the elections on September 24, 2017 . In addition to the SPD, it was supported by Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , the Left Party , the FWG and the Pirate Party Germany . She won the first ballot with 48.3% of the vote, a total of four applicants. She won the runoff election on October 15, 2017 with 58.1% against Peter Uebel ( CDU ) and took up the post of Lord Mayor of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, succeeding Eva Lohse on January 1, 2018.

Jutta Steinruck is divorced and has a grown son. She is a supporter of the handball team of TSG Friesenheim .
