from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Day against homosexuals, bisexuals, inter- and transphobia or -feindlichkeit ( English International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia , shortly IDAHOBIT ) is since 2005 annually on 17 May of homosexuals, and later transport, Bisexuals and intersex people, celebrated as a day of action to draw attention to the discrimination and punishment of people who differ from heteronormativity in their sexual orientation or gender identity through campaigns , media attention and lobbyingdiffer. The date was chosen to commemorate May 17, 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to remove homosexuality from its disease diagnosis code. Transsexuality was only deleted as a "disease" by the WHO in 2018 with the appearance of the ICD-11 .

history

The initiative for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia came from Louis-Georges Tin, who headed the French section of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) until 2013 . In addition to the reminder of the end of the definition as a disease by the WHO, the date 17.5. also parallels to the former Section 175 of the German Criminal Code , which is why May 17th in Germany was popularly referred to as the "gay holiday" even before 1990.

On May 17, 2006, the then spokeswoman for the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany (LSVD), Sabine Gilleßen, declared on the International Day Against Homophobia : “All over the world, lesbians and gays who live openly and do not hide their homosexuality are threatened by discrimination and persecution . We call on the federal government to follow the example of Belgium, France and the European Parliament, to sign the petition to the United Nations and to work for the United Nations to declare May 17th the day of action against homophobia. "

On the occasion of the Day of Action in 2008, the human rights organization counted Human Rights Watch the Polish President Lech Kaczynski to the politicians, the world's homosexuals most discriminate. Uganda's head of state Yoweri Museveni was also criticized for openly calling for homosexuals to be excluded. On the other hand, Ireland , Colombia and Nepal have made progress in gender equality .

In May 2009, homosexuality was still a criminal offense in around 70 countries; homosexual acts were punishable by the death penalty in seven countries ( Iran , Sudan , Yemen , Mauritania and Saudi Arabia, and the sharia-dominated areas of Somalia and Nigeria ) . It is unclear whether homosexuality is also punishable by death in the United Arab Emirates .

In 2018 there were mostly flash mob-like actions in at least 68 German cities . On the occasion of the day, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, complained that hatred of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals was widespread in Europe. In many European countries, prejudice and violence prevented homosexual and transsexuals from living freely and safely. In European and non-European countries, the actions were canceled or violence was even perpetrated against activists. The rainbow flag waved for the first time on May 17th in front of the European Parliament in Brussels. German embassies took part in IDAHOBIT: In China, for example, a large rainbow flag adorned the embassy building. In several Eastern European countries, Western embassies published statements expressing their support for LGBTI people , for example in Moldova.
