The International Diaconate Center (IDZ) is a church association based in Rottenburg am Neckar in Baden-Württemberg . The aim is to renew the permanent diaconate in the Roman Catholic Church . Protector is Bishop Gebhard Fürst , President is Gerald DuPont.

history

In 1951, social workers founded the first diaconate group in Freiburg im Breisgau . Just three years later, a second diaconal group was founded in Munich. From 1958 further diaconate groups were founded in Germany and other countries (including France, Austria and Latin America). Encouraged by Georg Hüssler , then General Secretary of the German Caritas Association , these diaconate groups came together in 1959 in Freiburg to form the international diaconate group. On the occasion of the Second Vatican Council , the International Diaconate Circle approached the participating bishops in 1962 with a petition for the renewal of the diaconate. In 1965 an international study conference took place in Rome on the subject of “Deacon in Church and World Today”. In the same year, this resulted in the “International Information Center for Questions of the Diaconate” in Freiburg, which was renamed the International Diaconate Center in 1969 after its tasks were redefined . In 1992 the IDZ was relocated from Freiburg to Rottenburg am Neckar . a. because Walter Kasper , then Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart , was particularly committed to the permanent diaconate because of his ecclesiological convictions. The Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart is therefore the bishop of the location.
