Coordinates: 29 ° 46 ' S , 151 ° 7' O Inverell Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 8,597.2 km² and has about 16,500 inhabitants.
Inverell is located in the northeast of the state on the border with Queensland about 630 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 430 km southwest of Brisbane . The area includes 83 hamlets and hamlets, including Ashford, Bonshaw, Bukkulla, Delungra , Elsmore, Gilgai, Gum Flat, Inverell , Kings Plains, Mount Russell, Nullamanna, Oakwood, Sapphire, Stannifer, Wallangra and Yetman. The Shire Council is located in Inverell in the south of the LGA, where about 9,500 people live.

The Inverell Shire Council has twelve members who are elected by LGA residents. Inverell is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
