Ioannikios Kartanos

Ioannikios Kartanos (Ιωαννίκιος Καρτάνος) (* around 1500 ; † after 1567 ) was an Orthodox clergyman from Corfu who lived and worked at the time of the Venetian rule over the Ionian Islands .

Life

Born around 1500 as the son of a shipbuilder in Corfu, his work is documented for the first time in 1521 in Rhodes , where he is already referred to as a clergyman and has restored a manuscript. Kartanos' life is shaped by trips to Constantinople , Crete , Venice , Rome and the like. a. In 1534 he got into a public dispute with the Catholic convert , Arsenios, Metropolitan of Monemvasia , and was arrested by the Venetian authorities. In the period of his imprisonment until 1537 he wrote (or only completed) his only surviving work. Kartanos probably died after 1567.

Kartanos' only surviving work, Palaia te kai Nea Diathiki itoi to anthos kai anankaion aftis ( Παλαιά τε καὶ Νέα Διαθήκη ἤτοι τὸ ἄνθος καὶ ἀναγκαῖον αὐτῆς for the flowering of its testimony , old and new ), is a large part of the necessary or its translation Biblical paraphrase based on an Italian model, expanded by popular theological texts. The merit of the didactically popular book, which was printed in Venice in 1536, is the choice of a simple vernacular , which is justified with the target group, uneducated people. The work was heavily criticized by the learned cleric Pachomios Rousanos (Ρουσάνος) and was rejected by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople , but became very popular in the further 16th century (4 more prints in the 16th century) and was spread throughout the Greek-speaking area.
