Klaus Mümpfer (* 1942 in Worms ) is a German photographer , journalist and jazz critic. He is the holder of the Medal of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Life

Klaus Mümpfer was born in Worms in 1942 as the son of Helle and Karl Mümpfer. After studying political science and journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1963 to 1968, he became a journalist for the Rhein Main publishing group . His main job until his retirement in 2007 was, among other things, the head of various local editorial offices, most recently at the Allgemeine Zeitung in Mainz. He has two sons with his wife Barbara, whom he married in 1979.

In 1964 he co-founded the first Worms jazz club, Tunnel 64 , and was its managing director from its foundation until 1967. Since 1968 he has been working as a journalist and photographer on politics and jazz for daily newspapers and specialist magazines. Mümpfers work as a jazz photographer and jazz critic was recognized internationally. He has been appointed to the jury of various jazz prizes , including the Škoda Jazz Prize, the Rheinhessen Jazz Prize, the Rhineland-Palatinate Jazz Prize and the Südwestrundfunk (1981 to 1998), as well as the Jugend jazzt competition of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Music Council .

From 1980 to 1984 Klaus Mümpfer was artistic director of the Mainz Jazz Week in the lower house of Mainz . In 2007 he was awarded the State of Rhineland-Palatinate's Medal of Merit for promoting jazz and culture for his commitment . Since his retirement in 2007 he has continued to work as a critic and photographer for trade magazines and various daily newspapers. He is also a board member of the Rheinhessen Jazz Club. In 2012 he also received the silver badge of honor from the German Association of Journalists (DJV) for his voluntary work.

Publications

In addition to numerous articles and reviews in various daily newspapers, Klaus Mümpfer has also been writing for the Jazz Podium since the mid-1970s . He published reviews and pictures in the Belgian Jazz Halo , the Polish Jazzforum , the Dutch Zing magazine and the Japanese Jazz Guitar Book . On the German Jazzpages he has a special section, Klaus Mümpfers Jazz notes . In 1986 he published the book Hospitality in the Natural Paradise Nahe - Hunsrück together with Fred Lex . For ten years, Klaus Mümpfer has had his own gallery in the US Internet magazine allaboutjazz .

Exhibitions

As a jazz and political photographer, Klaus Mümpfer has regular exhibitions. Its best known is Jazz in the Picture . The exhibition venues include Bonn, the Rhineland-Palatinate State Representation in Berlin, the Mainz State Parliament, the Nieder-Olmer Town Hall, but also Ludwigshafen, Speyer, Bad Kreuznach, Alzey, Rüsselsheim and Lahnstein.
