Ioannis Theotokis

Ioannis Theotokis ( Greek Ιωάννης Θεοτόκης , * 1880 in Corfu ; † June 6, 1961 ) was a Greek politician and former prime minister.

family

Theotokis came from a politically influential Corfiot family. He was the son of four times Prime Minister Georgios Theotokis . His older brother Nikolaos Theotokis was also a politician and was executed as a traitor after his defeat in the Greco-Turkish War . His son Spyros Theotokis later also became a politician. He was also the uncle of the future Prime Minister Georgios Rallis .

Political career

Theotokis was chamberlain to Queen Sophie , the wife of King Constantine I.

He began his actual political career with the election of the member of the National Assembly (Voulí ton Ellínon) , in which he was re-elected seven times. He was also Minister of Agriculture three times.

From October to November 1935 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Georgios Kondylis , who brought King George II back to Greece from exile. During the dictatorship of General Ioannis Metaxas , he was placed under house arrest on the island of Corfu between 1936 and 1941 .

After the end of the Second World War he was President of the National Assembly for a short time in 1946. From January 6 to March 23, 1950, he was finally Prime Minister.
