Ioannis Vilaras ( Greek Ιωάννης / Γιάνης Βηλαράς ; * 1771 ; † 1823 ) was a lyric poet, satirical poet and prose author with significant contributions to the Greek language dispute . He practiced the profession of doctor.

Life

Ioannis Vilaras was born in Kythera in 1771, but grew up in Ioannina , his father's hometown, where he also studied. He learned Latin, Italian, French and elementary math. His father was a respected doctor in the region. He himself studied medicine in Italy from 1789 , certainly in Padua (where he also received his diploma), and also in Bologna . On his return to the capital of Epirus , he became the personal physician of Beli Pasha , son of Ali Pasha and his harem . He himself was in contact with well-known spiritual personalities in Ioannina, such as Athanasios Psalidas , but also with the entire Greek world.

After the siege of Ioannina by the Turkish army, Ioannis Vilaras left Ali Pasha and found shelter in the village of Tsepelovo in the Zagori region. There he died after three years (1823), leaving his wife and two sons in poor economic circumstances.

His only surviving work related to his family is a delicate fatherly letter to one of his two sons, one of the poet's most immediate and beautiful works.

Ioannis Vilaras was one of the first poets in modern Greek history and laid the foundation for modern Greek poetry. He advocated demoticism (he used the Dimotiki and not the Koine ) and was also an opponent of historicizing orthography (accents, spiritus, homophony) . His best-known work, personally dedicated to his friend Athanasios Psalidas, Romeiki Glosa ('the Modern Greek Language' - in his own orthography the work appeared as "η ρομεηκη γλοσα", in polytonic orthography it would be ἡ ῤωμαίικη γίλώῶσσα , in today's standard orthography γίλώ ροημ , in today's standard orthography was printed in Corfu in 1814. This set out his linguistic beliefs. The grammar is dealt with on two pages.

Other of his works are the prose works Amartia and the excellent Gnothi sauton (Know Thyself). In 1953 the collected works of Ioannis Vilaras were published, which also contains erotic , satirical and lyrical poems, fairy tales and riddles. He was strongly influenced by the Arcadian School of Poetry . In addition to his rich literary work, he also translated parts of ancient Greek works.
