Iodotropheus is a genus from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), whichis endemic to Lake Malawi in eastern Africa. The name refers to the rust-colored areas on the head and back of the type specimens ( size : "ios" = rust + Tropheus (genus of cichlids)).

features

Iodotropheus species are 6.5 to 11 cm long, females remain slightly smaller. They are similar to the genus Pseudotropheus . The head profile rises steeply, a fold of skin connects the upper lip with the top of the muzzle. Adult fish have an outer row of large, single-pointed teeth. The smaller teeth of the inner rows of teeth are two to three pointed. The gill trap has 7 to 10 spines on the first ceratobranchial and 1 to 3 on the first epibranchial, the bone support of the upper branch of the first gill arch. All Iodotropheus species are mouthbrooders . Their egg spots are outlined in black.
