Ion James Muirhead Williams

Ion James Muirhead Williams (born June 29, 1912 in Kenilworth , Cape Country , † January 7, 2001 ) was a South African engineer and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " I.Williams "; earlier, the abbreviation " IJMWilliams " was also in use.

Live and act

Williams graduated from the University of Cape Town with an engineering degree. In the following years he worked as an engineer. He then worked as an amateur botanist for decades. It was not until 1972 that he received a degree as a botanist from the University of Cape Town for his revision of the genus of the silver trees ( Leucadendron ) and investigations into several genera from the diamond family (Rutaceae).

Williams earned great merit with his commitment to the Vogelgat nature reserve near Hermanus, which he founded . In 1969 he bought the site; He took care of the creation of paths and accommodations in the nature reserve, made significant contributions to the establishment of the Fernkloof Herbarium and worked with great commitment to the removal of invasive neophytes from the flora of the nature reserve.

Williams was awarded the Harry Bolus Medal in 1973; In 1984 he received the Cape Times Centenary Medal for Conservation . In 1997 he was awarded the Freedom of Hermanus .

His botanical collection was the source of newly described plant species such as Sympezia williamsorum Oliver and Indigofera superba C.H. Stirt. .
