Iosif Kovács (born November 13, 1921 in Timişoara , Timiş County ; † 2003 ) was a Romanian football player . He came to 201 appearances in the top Romanian league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1952 Olympic Games .

Career

Iosif Kovács began his career in 1939 in his hometown of Timisoara at Chinezul , which at that time in the second highest Romanian football league, the Divizia B played. At the end of the season he moved to local rivals Ripensia , where he made his debut in the top division, Divizia A , on September 8, 1940 . There he was able to prove his scoring qualities for the first time with 20 goals in 21 games.

When the game had to be interrupted due to the war , Kovács moved to FC Craiova , where he was active in the regional championship. After the end of the war he joined Carmen Bucharest . In the 1946/47 season he was able to contribute 24 goals to the greatest success in the club's history, the runner-up.

After Carmen Bucharest had been forcibly dissolved by the new Romanian government at the end of the season, Kovács returned to his hometown and joined CFR Timişoara (later Locomotiva Timişoara), which also played in Divizia A. Here, too, he was involved in the greatest success of the club, when he made a significant contribution to second place in the 1947/48 season and to reaching the Romanian Cup final with 22 goals .

After these successes, Kovács could no longer build on previous performances in the club. Until 1956, when he ended his career, he was rarely able to prove his scoring potential. In the last year of its career, the club even got out of Divizia A.

National team

Kovács came to seven missions for the Romanian national football team and scored two goals. He made his debut on June 13, 1943 against Slovakia , where he immediately scored a goal. In 1952 Kovács was in the squad for the Olympic Games in Helsinki and was used in the game against the eventual Olympic champion Hungary .
