Map of the Iowa Territory

The Iowa Territory was a historic territory of the United States that existed from July 4, 1838 through December 28, 1846. At that time, the southeastern part was separated and incorporated into the Union as the 29th state under the name Iowa . The Minnesota Territory was created in 1849 from the remaining, initially not reorganized area .

story

Most of the territory of the Iowa Territory was originally part of the Missouri Territory , which had evolved from the Louisiana Territory acquired by France through the Louisiana Purchase . The Louisiana Purchase was the largest land purchase in human history, in which the United States acquired 2,144,476 km² of land from France in 1803 .

When Missouri became a state in 1821, this area (along with what is now South and North Dakota ) became a so-called Unorganized Territory . The area was closed to white people until the 1830s. This situation only changed after the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832. On June 28, 1834, the territories were annexed to the Michigan Territory . When Michigan became a state in 1836, they were separated as part of the Wisconsin Territory .

The Iowa Territory, which was separated on July 4, 1838, corresponded to the Iowa District of western Wisconsin Territory, which consisted of the areas west of the Mississippi River . The original boundaries of the territory included what is now the state of Minnesota and parts of the two states of South and North Dakota. The Iowa Territory was nearly 500,000 km².

Burlington was the territorial capital until the official appointment of Iowa City in 1841. Robert Lucas , the former governor of the state of Ohio , became the first governor of the newly established territory.
