The Ipnavik River is an approximately 110 km long right tributary of the Colville River in northern Alaska .
Its source is on the northern flank of the Brook range . It flows in a northeasterly direction and flows 80 km north-northeast of Howard Pass into the Colville River, which flows through the North Slope to the Arctic Ocean . The Ipnavik River is one of many rivers and creeks that feed the Colville River from the Brooks range north of the continental divide .
The name of the river was first documented in 1925 by Gerald Fitzgerald of the United States Geological Survey as "Ipnavak" and means something like "place where young Dall sheep grow up" in the language of the indigenous people of Alaska .
