Iratxe García Pérez (born October 7, 1974 in Baracaldo ) is a Spanish politician of the socialist party PSOE and a member of the European Parliament . Since June 18, 2019, she has been the group leader of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats .

After a diploma in social work (1995), Iratxe García was a member of the municipal council of Laguna de Duero and the provincial parliament of Valladolid from 1995 to 2000 . She won a seat in the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2000 , which she held until 2004. In the 2004 European elections she was finally elected to the European Parliament , where she belongs to the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES). She was a member of the Committee on Regional Development for the entire electoral term .

In the EU Parliament period 2009-2014, Perez was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development , the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the Delegation for Relations with India . Perez is a deputy in the Committee on Regional Development , in the Delegation for relations with Israel and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .

From 2014 to 2017 she was Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and thus a member of the Conference of Committee Chairs . She then remained a member of this committee until the end of the eighth electoral term. Pérez continued to be a member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety from 2014 to 2015 and of the Regional Development Committee from 2015 to 2019 .
