Irène Aebi (born July 27, 1939 in Zurich ) is a Swiss cellist, violinist and singer in the field of free jazz .

At the age of 6, Aebi made her debut as a pianist and soon also as a violinist with the orchestra of the Geneva Conservatory . At the end of 1960 she met Steve Lacy in Rome , who became her significant other. After touring South America, the couple settled in Paris. Aebi also worked musically with Lacy in various formations for more than 40 years and often concentrated on the cello (on which she is self-taught). She also contributed vocal parts to the joint performance, drawing on texts from different authors, from Laozi to Osip Mandelstam and Blaise Cendrars to Guillaume Apollinaire . In some formations (e.g. trio with Lacy and Frederic Rzewski , Rushes: 10 Songs from Russia ) she works exclusively as an impressive singer.

Aebi has also recorded with Evan Parker , Mal Waldron , Alan Silva , Derek Bailey , Bobby Few and Takashi Kako . Christoph Gallio composed solo pieces for her.
