The Avenida da Liberdade is a boulevard in Lisbon based on the model of the Parisian Avenue des Champs-Élysées . It begins at Praça dos Restauradores and connects the lower town ( Baixa ) , which was built after the earthquake of 1755, with the higher districts in the north and was continued in Avenidas Novas from the beginning of the 20th century .
history
After the earthquake of 1755 , the Marquês de Pombal had the Passeio público , Lisbon's first “public garden”, laid out in the lower area of today's avenue . Regardless of its name, it was initially surrounded by walls and gates and only accessible to the higher classes. It was not until the Liberals came to power in 1821 that the walls of the garden were removed and opened to the general public.
The plans for the construction of the Avenida based on the Parisian Avenue des Champs-Élysées initially attracted violent protests due to the associated destruction of the Passeio público , but a first section of the Avenida (after construction began in 1879) became the 100th in 1882. Dedicated to the anniversary of the Marquês de Pombal's death. The Rotunda Praça Marquês de Pombal represents a traffic junction, from which the Avenidas Novas branch .
The development of the 90 meters wide and 1,100 meters long Avenida in the style of the Wilhelminian style and Art Nouveau initially had a provincial character due to the crisis in Portugal's political and economic situation around 1900 . In 1936, the monument to Rosa Araújo was erected here.
In the last few decades, numerous older buildings, including valuable ones, have been demolished in the wake of the economic boom and replaced by new buildings by financial institutions and hotels. So also the former picturesque trams from a line of the Lisbon Metro opened in 1959 .
With its palm trees and plane trees , which are over a hundred years old , the geometric patterns of the paving and the elegant shops, the Avenida remains one of the great streets in Europe despite certain transformation problems.
